This is Me

This is my friend Katy

This is Guu! Apparently it is all the rave right now. Because they are such a budding restaurant, they do not take reservations. Thankfully, Katy so graciously went early to put our names down on the waiting list and then patiently waited in the cold rain until I joined her after work. Unfortunately because they are so busy, there was no place to wait inside, so we had to stand outside and patiently wait our welcome ):

So here is the story..

Because I had never heard of Guu, and neither of us had ever been there before, Katy decided to do a little bit of research on the weekend, when she had Internet access. She researched and read several people's reviews on the food at Guu and took note of the MUST TRY dishes. Needless to say, when we sat down to order, we looked pretty ridiculous reading off both the menu and this scrap of paper (:

GUU is a quaint little restaurant, with a combination of communal tables, bar stools that face the kitchen and a few tables at the side for individual parties. Luckily enough, after we were warmly greeted by all the staff and people eating there (THAT'S RIGHT EVERYONE ONE SAYS HI AND BYE as you come and go - just like in JAPAN!) , we had the opportunity of sitting at one of the individual tables - which made this blog possible!

The following pictures are of the foods that we ended up trying! Unfortunately, the picture quality sucks, not only because the iphone doesn't have a good camera on it, but because lighting was very dim, and flash photography would have ruined the atmosphere of the joint!

This Miso Soup ($2.50) tasted "authentic"! It did not taste powdery or as if it came from a mix/can. Unfortunately, it was also very salty and expensive, but overall it was a good experience. Although it received rave reviews, I think any person only needs to try a sip.

The sashimi salad ($7.80) was by far the worst dish we had that night. Although the salad was lightly dressed and the sashimi was amazing, there was way too many iceberg lettuce leaves for the price we had to pay for it. Also, Katy and I both found that it was too similar of a dish to the Aburi Salmon!

Aburi Salmon ($6.80) is Salmon Sashimi done right! It is lightly dressed with some type of mayo sauce and green onions, and lightly grilled along the edges! This change of texture definitely adds to the eating experience!

Our next dish was the beef sashimi- or formally known as Gyu Carpaccio ($6.80)! For all the people who know me, you can probably guess that I LOVED this dish. For all who don't, to state it concisely, basically every time I order steak, I ask for it as RAW as they can safely prepare it!

Yaki Udon - ($7.80) Although Udon is a dish commonly consumed by many asian families because of the short time in which it takes to be prepared the pre-packaged cake of noodles, Guu enabled me to appreciate the taste of FRESHLY made noodles, saturated with a sweet terriyaki sauce and seaweed. However, this dish was a lot smaller than expected. ): So we had to order another "entree".

Kinoko Cheese Bibimbop ($8.30). Although this was our most spontaneous and expensive dish, it really ended the night off quite well. I know most of you are thinking CHEESE AND RICE? But I can't even begin to explain how AMAZING this was! Also, it was the most filling of them all, and therefore had the best value for taste and satisfaction in my mind!

Of course after waiting over an hour in the rain and wind, dinner would not have been worth it if we didn't top things off with some desserts! Katy decided to follow the reviews and order an Almond Tofu Jelly-like thing, and I found a special for their experiemental dessert - which happened to be Tofu Cheesecake that night!

The almond tofu ($3.50) had a strong almond taste that I really enjoyed! It was fresh, simple and tasty! Because of it's silkiness, it was hard not to devour this one!

The slice of Tofu cheese cake ($4.00) was no bigger than a regular-sized highlighter but packed a taste like no other! The consistancy was creamy and soft, but the taste was a lot fluffier and subtle than other tofu desserts I have had before! In combination with its crust, this definitely helped end the night on a high note!

Although we only planned to spend $20 each on the meal, due to unforeseen circumstances and smaller than expected dish sizes, we went a little over budget, but every penny was worth it!

Anyway, if you are looking for a nice new place to try downtown with a fun ambiance, I would definitely recommend Guu - however be prepared to wait and pay more than you expect for your meal!
